About Laura Nooks

Your cat sleeps on your books anyway. This is the whole idea.

Laura Nooks makes book-shaped cat beds for people whose cats have already claimed the bookshelf — the ones who nap on the paperbacks, shed on the hardbacks, and treat the shelf as theirs regardless of what you'd prefer. Rather than fight it, we made her somewhere of her own that belongs on the same wall.

What it actually is

A plush velvet book, roughly 50 cm tall and 42 cm wide, that mounts flat to the wall like a framed picture. There's a wide oval opening in the front cover and a soft removable cushion inside. From the side you see a thick cream page-block, which is what sells it as a book rather than a cushion. It takes up no floor space, which matters if you live somewhere small and already own furniture you didn't choose for its looks.

Four covers, four shelves

Deep forest green with a gold ring. Maroon with a knitted scarf. Burnt orange with a sculpted rose. Warm tan with a dragon. Each one is made to sit beside the books it belongs with, so it reads as part of the shelf instead of as pet furniture that wandered into the wrong room.

The thing most people get wrong

Wall-mounted cat beds get photographed high up because it looks striking in the picture. It also means the cat never uses it. We build and photograph ours low — about 65 cm off the floor, roughly level with the second shelf up on a standard bookcase — so she can hop straight in from the carpet in one easy jump. A cat bed she has to plan a route to is an ornament. A cat bed she falls into on the way past is a cat bed.
